Our Medical Spanish course is designed for medical personnel that want to improve their communication with Spanish-speaking patients and their families. It is best to first reach the A2 level before specializing in Medical Spanish. If you start with no Spanish speaking skills at all, you will need between 3 and 6 weeks to achieve this level.
Course topics include:
- vocabulary of the body parts
- the areas of the hospital
- the terms for different medical personnel
- equipment and diseases
You will learn the grammatical structures and relevant cultural considerations that will enable you to register patients, obtain their medical history, find out what happened, explain the necessary medical procedures, give instructions while examining, and describe processes such as the registering of medicines.
The Medical Spanish course also includes discussions about different diseases and their prevention. Of course you can let us know your area of specialization or specific interests (such as pregnancies, the elderly or emergency response) so we can adapt the course to your needs.
At our BOQUETE location, we offer a volunteer position in a medical clinic to acquire hands-on experience and immediate application of the course curriculum. Observation and helping out with basic tasks like cleaning wounds, weighing and measuring patients as well as taking their blood pressure and pulse are possible within this volunteer option. The clinic accepts both persons with a medical degree and medicine students.
This clinic is part of the “Ministerio de Salud” which provides healthcare and information to those that do not have insurance. In Boquete this means that lots of indigenous people attend this clinic.
The application procedure starts one month before you would like to start. Copy of passport, CV and medical identification need to be sent to us. Workdays are from 7:00 am till 3:00 pm and the clinic is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
